The Charlotte Catholic Cougars opened the season at home with a 42-7 victory over the South Mecklenburg Sabres. Known as the “Battle of Park Road”, the Cougars jumped out early and seized control of the match up with a 28 point 1st quarter. The always potent Charlotte Catholic running game shined, and the Cougars managed several big runs in the first half. After the Cougars first score, a well executed high and short kick-off angled towards the sideline was a big early play for the Cougars. The kick-off was recovered by the Cougars and set up a short field putting the Sabres right back on defense only 3-4 minutes into the game.
The Charlotte Catholic defense had a great start to the season, causing several turnovers and keeping the Sabre offense off of the field, while at the same time controlling field position for the offense.
The young Sabres battled hard for first year head coach Joe Evans and avoided the shut out with a 4th quarter TD by Anthony Hailey. The Cougars move to 1-0 on the season, while the Sabres fall to 0-1.
