Spring Football 2019: Harding Rams

The Harding Rams could sneak up on people this season after a tough year last fall

I spoke with a lot of people about the Harding Rams last season, and the big question I kept getting was - what is going on over there? Coming off winning a state championship, the Rams struggled through the start of the season, and after a mid-season coaching change, Van Smith has stayed on to be the permanent head coach for the Rams for this season and beyond.

Today I saw an energetic group of coaches leading a team with some really good athletic talent in the skill positions, as well as several big linemen working hard on techniques during the 7 on 7 period I observed. Some returning players that everyone knows will be in some new positions, and the scheme changes on both sides of the ball I think will put some key players in great positions to succeed.

One of the things Coach Smith definitely preaches is hustle and being a student of the game on both sides of the ball, quickly correcting any errors immediately and making sure players don’t make the same mistake twice. With him and these assistants leading the charge, I expect a much better overall season for the Rams this year.
