The Olympic Trojans were busy installing a lot of their base schemes on both offense on defense when I arrived to their practice to check them out in action. Head Coach Brandon Thompson is not like some other head coaches who came from outside of their programs and are behind the curve in getting to know their kids and establishing relationships.
Coach Thompson was promoted from within, as he was coaching wide receivers as well as being the JV Head Coach for the Trojans most recently, and he has been at Olympic since 2014 when Keith Wilkes was leading the program. Thompson has some talent to work with, especially on the lines of scrimmage with big OL Tavien Ford, a 1st team All-Conference player returning and rising senior DE Marquise Fleming who was second in the conference in sacks last season.
Coach Daren Hart has also joined Olympic as Defensive Coordinator, which will help stabilize that side of the football. I was impressed with how well the Trojans took coaching and really worked hard and hustled during the entire practice. Coach Thompson not only spoke to the Trojans about football after practice, but gave insights into what colleges are looking for during this recruiting period and shared wisdom about the process.
Overall I think this Trojans team, like all teams in the Charlotte Metro Area, have talent, this city is rich with it. The key to their success will be how quickly they learn their new schemes and roles, but I think Olympic’s new coach was an excellent hire, and the Trojans are on the right road to becoming a successful team in the South Meck 7 conference.
