Game Preview By Shiree Glenn

Welcome to Week 7 of high school football and the second week of conference play.

This week CFI travels to Providence as they take on Berry in a So Meck 7 4A conference battle. Both teams need a win as they both remain winless against conference teams.

The Panthers (1-5) have a lot of work to do if they hope to make it into the playoffs. Their team is led by head coach, Wes Ward who has his work cut out for him if he plans to get his team a win this week. Their junior quarterback, Holland Stallings, has struggled to find any sort of rhythm this season. They came close in their game against West Meck but failed to close the game out. They lost by 11. They’re playing a Berry team in a similar situation as them. So, they have an opportunity to turn their season around with a win this week.

Berry (1-3) is looking to spoil Providence’s plans by hopefully getting a win of their own. The school got a new football stadium and needs a new team to go along with that. Andrew Howard, head coach at Berry, has to figure out how to get his guys motivated. Conference ball is always played differently than non-conference so look for Berry to come out inspired on Friday night.

This should be a pretty good matchup between two teams trying to add another win to their win column. Who will come out victorious? Come out Friday night with CFI and catch all the action.

Kickoff is at 7 p.m.

Mallard Creek at Vance - Game Of The Week Coverage

Player Focus: Mallard Creek RB #2 Quasean Holmes vs. Vance LB #5 Stefon Thompson

Mallard Creek RB Quasean Holmes

Mallard Creek RB Quasean Holmes

Quasean Holmes - We have not heard a lot about Quasean because he started the season a little banged up, however this is the kind of game he can make a huge difference in. Mallard Creek has Trenton Simpson of course and Brian Robinson, who made waves in the Dutch Fork game especially. But Holmes brings some special abilities of his own, catching the ball in space and showing some elite speed on plays such as stretches, tosses, and quick hitting plays out of the backfield. Against a talented Vance defense, Mallard Creek will have plenty of weapons that most teams don’t have, and Holmes has a chance to be a wild card in this game matching up against the talented Vance linebackers.

Vance LB Stefon Thompson

Vance LB Stefon Thompson

Stefon Thompson - Stefon this season, his senior year, is helping Vance in a lot of ways - a vocal team leader, playing offense in special packages, and continuing to play stellar defense. In his highlight film, Stefon shows some incredible ability to play the pass from the LB position, something that you don’t always see developed well in high school linebackers. In zone coverage he spot drops well and is aware of his responsibility and reacts well with his great athletic ability. Yet he also has enough speed not to be a liability against slot receivers in man coverage, and that will be an important asset this week against Mallard Creek’s Air Raid offense.

Matt Morrow and Shiree Glenn preview the Game Of The Week, the Mavericks making the short trip down I-85 to take on the Cougars

Welcome to week six of high school football with Charlotte Football Insiders. This week CFI travels to Vance to watch the Cougars take on the Mallard Creek Mavericks.

Mallard Creek comes into this game 3-0-1 on the season, tying with Dutch Fork to start it off and winning the rest of the way. They are rolling on offense and they have senior quarterback Dustin Noller and junior wide receiver Elijiah Metcalf to thank for that. Noller has thrown 11 touchdowns for 1103 yards while Metcalf has 8 touchdown receptions for 488 yards. How do coach Mike Palmieri and his Mavericks respond to that suffocating Cougars defense?

Vance doesn’t shy away from offense either but it’s their defense that’s going to have to shine in this game. Vance is 3-0 for the season, their most impressive win coming against Heritage High School in Lynchburg, VA. In three games the Cougars have allowed just 14 points from their opponents and completely shut out Huss in their second week. Head coach, Glenwood Ferebee is going to have to ramp up their defense up to another level if they hope to contain Mallard Creek’s offense this week.

This being the first week of conference play sets up so many scenarios already for what the playoffs will look like. You have the top two teams in the I-Meck 4A conference going head-to-head. One shines on defense and they both shine on offense. Should be a great matchup for these two teams.

Kickoff is at 7 p.m.

Head Coach Adam Hastings - Providence Day Chargers

CFI will be at Providence Day this Friday night as they take on Country Day.

The Chargers are looking to add to their perfect 3-0 record by knocking off the Buccaneers. They are led by head coach Adam Hastings and their senior quarterback Cody Cater. Country Day should watch out for freshman running back/wide receiver Jt Smith who through 3 games has already tallied five touchdowns (two rushing, three receiving) and 190 all-purpose yards.

Country Day comes into the game with positives of their own starting with a 4-0 record. Junior quarterback Russell Tabor likes to throw his fair share of touchdowns with six already this year. The Buccaneers are led by head coach Drew Witman who took over for his father Bob, in 2015. Witman was quarterback at Charlotte Country Day where he won a state championship his junior year and graduated in 2006.

Offense is the common denominator for both teams as they get set to play on Friday night. Both coaches have their hands full as they make a game plan against one another. Both teams have talented quarterbacks with promising weapons around them.

This looks to be a promising match-up.

Kick-off is at 7 p.m. at Overcash Stadium.
