Weddington drops 45 and a rare shut out on Charlotte Catholic

WEDDINGTON, NC  10/4/19, Michael McArver    Going into Friday night’s game, the Weddington Warriors were 0-6 versus Charlotte Catholic since 2004.    That record includes 2 big loses in 2017, and another loss in 2018.    Weddington came into this year’s match up riding a 5-0 record and a seasoned crew of seniors who had played through a few of those previous loses.  Catholic on the other hand had not lost a regular season conference game in their last 66 attempts. However, the Cougars suffered 2 early non-conference losses in their first four games this season, and at 2-2, the Cougars are in unfamiliar territory early in the season. The big question in this one for most of the Charlotte area media was simple. Is this the year that Weddington gets over the hump and takes down Charlotte Catholic?

On Friday night, under the lights, Weddington showed up and answered the question. And they showed up BIG.  Big Dub “W” Football, came out with a conservative, yet determined ground and pound run game and controlled the line of scrimmage from the start.  Conservative play calling in the first half was a theme for both teams, but Weddington moved the ball with more consistency and took a 10-0 lead into the half.  #9 Will Shipley took a wildcat formation direct snap in for 6 for the first half’s only touchdown, and the Weddington Kicker #15 Ian Williams added a FG.

In the second half, Weddington’s constant grinding, relentless ground game spiked with a few swing passes mixed in, began to wear down the Charlotte Catholic defense.  After back to back Weddington touchdowns created by a Catholic turnover deep in their own territory, the Warrior defense took over the game and it was lights out from there.

The always potent Charlotte Catholic big red machine stalled drive after drive, giving up 3 turnovers and a long pick 6.  When it was all said and done, Weddington scored 5 touchdowns in the second half making the final score 45-0.  Weddington is now 1-6 against the Cougars.   Charlotte Catholic is now 2-3, and will travel to Sun Valley next week.   The Weddington Warriors are 6-0 and will travel to Piedmont.
