There have been a lot of great games in the traditional West Charlotte/West Meck rivalry, but not even many long time fans could remember a game like this one. In a classic defensive struggle, the West Meck Hawks pulled out a 7-0 victory over the Lions, on a defensive fumble recovery in the end zone by Deandre Gilliam.

Both of these teams had some unique circumstances coming into this game, as this was West Charlotte’s 2nd game of the week, having defeated Garinger 28-8 on Monday. For West Meck, this was their FIRST game of the season, after having their opener against Rocky River cancelled.

Some of our observations of this game right here:

  • I think both of these teams are better offensively than they showed tonight. Both sides have good talent and coaching on that side of the ball, and I expect both of them to be more productive next week with the routine of the season starting to settle in.

  • Not to take anything away from the defenses though, both sides were very well coached and always in position to make a play. We spoke briefly with West Charlotte Head Coach Josh Harris after the game who said he was very pleased with his defense’s performance in both of their games so far this season.

  • On the previous play to the fumble in the end zone resulting in the West Meck TD, West Meck QB Zaire Kenney ran a QB keeper and there was some discussion to whether he got in or not. Ironically, not ruling him in set up the West Meck game winner.

  • West Meck is a great place to watch a game, the planes nearby give you a neat perspective when they flyover, the sun setting in the west is a great look, and even though we couldn’t get to it, fried fish at a football game is always a great option!

  • The crowd ended up filling in to be a decent to good crowd in my opinion, but this used to be a sell out game back in the day. If you didn’t make it out, you missed a great Friday night to enjoy high school football. Don’t miss it again!
